How Columbian Star Andreas Escobar Was Killed After Scoring An Own Goal Against America.







Football is not just an ordinary game, it is one that is filled with passion, most footballers as well as the viewers devote their time and finances to follow the beautiful round leather game. Andreas Escobar was one of the few footballers that was passionate about the game during his time as a player.


 This attribute reflected throughout his playing career, his calmness and gentle style of play earned him the nickname "the gentleman". Andreas Escobar was born in Medellín, a city in Colombia in the year 1967, he started playing football 1985, when he joined the youth side of Atlético Nacional. 


Having shown epitome of brightness he was promoted to the senior team a year after, he featured 78times for Atlético Nacional before moving abroad to play for young boys. 


Andreas Escobar only stayed for 3 years in Switzerland before he returned home to his boyhood club Atlético Nacional. 


Back in Columbia, with Atlético Nacional Andreas Escobar career was at his peak and he was invited to participate in the 1994 world cup, a tournament that would eventually be his last tournament to participate in as a footballer.


 Andreas Escobar mistakenly scored an own goal against Untied states during the second group stage match of the tournament, when he stretched to block a cross from John Harkes, he mistakenly deflected the ball into his own goal post. 


The loss against United states meant that Columbia would definitely be ousted from the mundial. Andreas Escobar returned to Columbia after the elimination of Columbia from the 1994 world cup.


 Five days later he went out to party with few of his friends, they went to a bar in El- Poblado and visited a liquor store afterwards. Andreas Escobar was left alone by 3.00 am when his friends split up for reasons best known to them.


 Andreas Escobar was in his car when three men approached him they began having an argument which eventually led to two of the men bringing out there short guns and shooting Andreas Escobar six times.


 It was reported that the men were shouting goal when some bullet was released and did that,for six times, representing the six times the commentator shouted goal at the world cup stadium.


 The three men drove up leaving Andreas Escobar to bleed to death, luckily he was rushed to the hospital but later passed on 45 minutes later due to excessive bleeding. 


The death was widely believed to be a punishment for the own goal. 


This was how Andreas Escobar, a promising footballer ended up without completely fulfilling his footballing dream. 

Andreas Escobar's burial was attended by many dignitaries worldwide.
